One comment Staffordshire Pottery Identification Using Backstamps The name of the pottery manufacturer and an approximation of date of manufacture can be discovered if the piece of pottery has a backstamp. There are way too many to list here as it would take a whole new website to list them all! The best reference book we have found is the Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks by Geoffrey A Godden and is probably the only book you will ever need. You can get a copy by clicking on the link below or alternatavely your local library will probably have a copy in their reference section. General clues to dates can be given by words which appear in the backstamp. Arms after have simple quartered shield, pre have an inescutcheon or extra shield in the centre. Registered Numbers Registered numbers are a consecutive numbering system which started in of designs which were registered by companies. The Registered Number, usually written as Rd on the piece of pottery, gives the date when that design was registered to prevent copying, but it could have been made at any time later than that date.

Here are some tips. This though can only be a guide to a date – it is not an exact science and some backstamps were used for many, many years. Learning about styles and shapes can also help date pieces, particularly on the older pieces from the early s when many were not marked. In the book you will find over backstamps described.

The sitting was beneficial to both parties, the relatively new Burton branch studio achieving a kind of celebrity endorsement, and Mr Foster a handy set of cartes de visite to hand out to friends, business acquaintances and prospective purchasers of his products. Whether money actually changed hands or not — Foster was a canny businessman, even in his advanced years — is probably a moot point.
The fact that two copies of the portrait have already surfaced probably means that many more were produced. As alluded to earlier, Foster himself had spent a good portion of his life producing likenesses of people, in the pre-photographic era, and it was probably the advent of popular photographic portraiture that forced him to seek an alternative means of making a living, much as happened to William Seville some years later.
Miniature portrait, reputedly of Edward Foster as a young man Source unknown It is not clear exactly when Edward Foster, in the words of Mr. Later descriptions of the machine render it likely to have been a pantograph , or at the least an adaptation of one, which had been invented at least some two centuries earlier , but was perhaps not in common everyday use. His marketing skills were also improving, with specimens of his work left displayed prominently at several shops dotted around town in order to drum up more commissions.
A similar advertisement in The Derby Mercury on 20 December stated that he had taken apartments for a short time, at Mr. Black profile of unidentified boy, c. Peggy McClard who, at the time of writing, owns this silhouette and kindly gave me permission to use the image, states:
Estelle’s To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded. I grew up with “Friendly Village” Miss Helen’s china which had been inheritied from my grandmother, Estelle Elizabeth!
Regency by Johnson Brothers. The simplicity of white, elegantly fluted, works for nearly any occasion. Create a casual country atmosphere with gingham textiles and chunky glassware, or strike a note of urban sophistication with crystal stemware and dark subtly textured linens.
The exception is the ‘Sunburst’ Gloria Lustre mark. Little documentation exists about precisely when particular stamps were in use but a letter written to AE Gray’s son Robin in from one of his relations, Major General GA Jack Bond, contains the following: I thought the mixture of steamships, sailing boats, sunbursts, and other things he was using were low grade and old fashioned. At the same time I sent another for use on silver lustre alone – the mediaeval ship something like this sketch added.
I don’t remember when the accepted stamps were taken into use, but it was at Hanley. Sorry not to be more certain, but cannot feel that the history of England is much to be affected by a slight uncertainty in this matter! His Clipper mark was highly successful and was in use, subtly modified as appropriate, from the early s until the last of Gray’s Pottery products were made in Mr Gray would not necessarily want the white ware producer to take any credit for the pottery, hence his use of bold backstamps.
Produced by some sort of rubber stamp, this mark was applied to ware exclusively made for Gray’s Pottery. Dual marks are often an aid in dating items. The presence of an impressed mark can also be useful. Note that the information is given in good faith, based on pieces of pottery, oral evidence from Gray’s Pottery employees and documentary material in contemporary sources. Very little original company material has survived, meaning that potentially useful primary source data no longer exist.

The most popular designs that are still collected today include “Old Britain Castles”, “Dawn”, and “Historic America”. The company joined the Wedgewood group in In , Alfred and Frederick began production of durable tableware called “White Granite”. Their business became a success and they were later joined in the business by both Henry and Robert. This earthenware was similar to fine china, but it was as durable as ironstone. The products were exported to the united Sates and became very popular as they were reasonably priced and very durable tableware items.
The original factory closed in the s to accommodate the use of electricity rather than coal in pottery production. The business enjoyed popular success until the s, when tastes changed and competition grew. To remain competitive, Johnson Brothers became part of the Wedgewood group. In , Johnson products were no longer manufactured in Britain and production was moved to China due to lower production costs.

I felt I should write about them instead as I’d recently taken a 5 month or so hiatus from blogging. I did promise to share it today though, so here it is! I took the liberty of naming it “Monica’s Herbs De Provence Vegetable Beef Stew” for and after my sister-n-law who made it for some of my kids and hers one night in January when we’d gone over for a visit. She was busy chopping up all these veggies, throwing them into a big stock pot of yumminess and when I asked about it she just said she chops a bunch of this, a handful or two of that, a can of that, some of this, etc.
That’s my kind of cooking but of course it can be difficult to tell someone else how it’s made.

It’s the first one I’ve put together in quite some time as I’ve recently reposted tables from the past. Mind you, it took me a couple of days plus a couple more days to put it together, but I did it.
Now, my family just needs to enjoy it together….

I am Beyond excited to share my latest and greatest Estate Sale score! I have been coveting a set of Johnson Brothers Friendly Village dishes for some time now, but as usual I am unwilling to pay full price for them. I am on the mailing list for EstateSales. Net and watch it religiously. I just about died when when I saw a full set of the Friendly Village at a sale that started yesterday.
It didn’t work out various reasons but I gave her the name of a few reputable Estate Sale companies who could take on the job of selling the contents after the home sold. This home was packed with beautiful decorative accessories and furniture. I used to feel very strange about Estate Sales knowing that sometimes the circumstances under which the items were sold were often sad.
But, I think of it now as recycling and instead of buying new items I am reviving someone elses treasures. It is now made in China under the name “Johnson Brothers England “. This makes my set a lot more valuable. You can see on the backstamp where it says “Made in England” The set came with 17 dinner plates, bread plates, bowls, and cups and saucers and 2 serving bowls. I love all of the beautiful scenes on the dishes but I think my favorite is the “Covered Bridge” on the bowls.

The flow may be very slight to a heavy blur, where the pattern cannot be easily recognized. The blue color does not permeate through the body of the china. Known patterns of flow blue were first produced around in the Staffordshire area of England.
Credit is generally given to Josiah Wedgwood, who worked in that area. They were attempting to imitate the blue and white wares brought back by the ship captains of the tea trade. Early flow blue, s to s, was usually of the pearlware or ironstone variety. The later patterns, s to s, and the modern patterns after , were of the more delicate semi-porcelains. Most flow blue was made in England but it was made in many other countries, as well.

Your guide to antique pottery marks, porcelain marks and china marks What are Antique Marks? Exactly what are antique marks and china marks. What can they tell you? Watching the experts at antique roadshows or on auction house valuation days, you probably wonder just how they get so much information about a teacup, vase or a piece of silver simply by turning the item upside down.

Starting a Susie Cooper Collection Often a collection is started almost by accident, when one or more items are inherited from a relative, and in this case those first items may dictate the direction the collection is to take. Additional items may be purchased to ‘go with’ the first pieces and the collection will grow by means of gifts and further purchases till it becomes an absorbing hobby.
Eventually it may even become a spare time occupation, as the need to sell off surplus items to raise funds to buy more suitable ones leads into occasional dealing at antique fairs, perhaps, with retirement, becoming a full-time occupation and lifelong interest, For collectors this new found interest adds purpose to weekend outings, with planned visits to antique fairs and holidays offering new antique venues to explore with the collection in mind. Some collectors like to collect ‘across the board’, buying what takes their fancy out of what comes their way and including examples from all periods of Susie Cooper’s career, while others prefer to specialise in one or more periods or even select a favourite pattern, perhaps to fill a dresser or a particular set of shelves.
Alternatively, ‘shape’ can be the deciding factor, for example, coffee cans, which look attractive as a group, or wall-plates which will form a decorative display on almost any wall of the house. Some collectors aim at getting a single example of each pattern, but since it has been estimated that Susie Cooper designed around patterns, this is a mammoth task. Others decide to build up ‘sets’, which can be done piece by piece, though it is important to ensure that the condition of each piece is consistent throughout.
It is important, too, that the pieces in the collection harmonise with their setting. One way to ensure this is to emulate the original buyers, and to choose pieces with a particular setting in mind. Vases and tablelamps, for instance, are particularly suitable for sitting-rooms or bedrooms, while nursery ware displays attractively in the kitchen or bathroom. When more funds are available, teapots look impressive, especially if accompanied by a matching hot water jug and perhaps milk jug and sugar basin.
Complete teasets are less practical, taking up as they do so much more room. Bread and Butter Plates, being slightly ‘dished’ rather than the flat shape of dinner or pudding plates, are particularly effective either on the wall or behind a small group of matching items.
